Fit

Fit tends to be precise but not roomy; the Max 4 runs slightly short compared to the previous version, nearly a half size. Wide feet accommodated by the broad base.

Feel

Cushioning is dense and protective, neither particularly soft nor responsive. The forefoot rocker delivers a smooth ride; the bouncy sensation expected from a maximalist stack is not present.

Durability

Solid construction with minimal wear after 50 km. Estimated lifespan around 700 km; the 4 mm lug outsole may give out before other components.

Best for

Smooth trails and fire roads, long distances and ultramarathons. Suited for heavier runners seeking protection and stability; less appropriate for technical terrain or faster paces.

Weak points

The rigid heel counter, combined with generous padding, can cause Achilles tendon friction and blisters. High weight (up to 354 g in larger sizes) penalizes responsiveness even at moderate paces. Grip shows limitations in deep mud.
